Approach to cytomegalovirus infection in perinatal medicine

The consequences of congenital CMV infection can vary, from mild symptoms to more serious complications, including neurosensory disorders such as deafness, vision problems, developmental delays, and other disabilities. Therefore, it is important to take preventive measures to prevent CMV infection in pregnant women, but also to prevent infection of the fetus when a pregnant woman is infected. Finally, it is important to carry out appropriate medical monitoring in the event of infection of the fetus and of the child born with congenital CMV infection.

Artificial organs and tissues in transplantation - current affairs and perspectives

Artificial organs are bioengineered devices or tissues that scientists create and integrate into the human body to replace, duplicate, or augment functional, naturally occurring organs. They pose a solution to organ donor shortages, and can also be used as medical training tools.

How to assess Thyroid Nodules

In the general population, thyroid nodules are found in 5% by palpation and in 50% by ultrasonography (US). Initial evaluation of nodules should include serum thyroid-stimulating hormone measurement, fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy, and US. Thyroid micronodules are being detected with increasing frequency and are currently evaluated by US-FNA. Routine measurement of serum calcitonin and thyroglobulin and FNA rebiopsy are not recommended. Cytologically benign thyroid nodules should be followed rather than treated. Novel treatment options including iodine 131, percutaneous ethanol injection, and percutaneous laser thermal ablation have specific indications, advantages, and adverse effects.

Updates in pregnancy and immune-mediated rheumatic disorders

Managing patients with rheumatic diseases (RMD) during pregnancy and the postpartum period can
be a challenge for both rheumatologists and obstetricians. While disease activity during the course
of pregnancy varies with regard to the presence of underlying conditions, maintenance of remission
from conception through to delivery increases the chances of an uncomplicated pregnancy. A period
of remission of at least 6 months prior to conception increases the chance of a successful conception
while decreasing the risk of flares during pregnancy.
